Flood warning – A361

PLEASE NOTE
Update on A361 Glastonbury road closure
Further to the road closure alert this morning, parts of the flooded A361 Glastonbury road can be accessed.
Motorists can use either side of the flooded section of road and it is accessible for residents and local businesses. You can still travel from Taunton to East Lyng and from the Pipers Inn at Ashcott to Burrowbridge.
Due to flooding of the A361, the road is impassable between East Lyng (junction of Cutts Road) and the Somerset Levels Basket and Craft Centre at Burrowbridge.
The water level is still rising on the flooded section of the A361 and we do not advise people to try and drive through the water. The depth of the water is unknown and there are rhynes on either side of the carriageway that vehicles may fall in to.
We are also monitoring the A372 between Othery and Langport as this may also have to be closed if the water level continues to rise across the moor.
Whey-hey, the Council !

Well, they couldn’t have done better could they ?
I mean — as an example of how to make a perfect dog’s breakfast of an inanely simple task, the Council’s total cock-up over the local Tesco planning application really ought to win prizes internationally.
The electorate was divided into roughly three different points of view on this application. The highly vocal minority of town antis who oppose anything new on principle (incomers, to a man); those who thought it was a good idea to have a large Tesco in town; and those who really couldn’t care less either way.
Apart from the first group, should be fairly easy to please, right ?
Well, actually — no. The Council has managed to infuriate beyond belief all three groups.
The first, because they have allowed Tesco to go ahead — albeit with a reduced programme of faciliities on offer.
The second group, because although they welcomed a Tesco store in town, were expecting super-store facilities — with restaurant; office stationery etc.; pharmacy; and large free parking area. The amended plans passed by the Council mean that none of these will in fact be available to the townspeople on this site. All we get now is a bog-standard food and household goods store with limited parking space.
And the third group ? They simply cannot believe the Council’s pusillanimous incompetence in losing the £70,000 blood-money originally offered to the town by Tesco to offset any disruption caused by implementing their first plan.
So in one single action, the Council has managed to alienate everyone in town on this subject.
If it weren’t so tragic. it would be classically comic.
But nobody’s laughing. (Except Tesco.)
What will the Council do for a follow-up demonstration of utter incompetence in taking care of the townspeople’s interests, I wonder ?
Glastonbury Festival 2011 – June 22nd-26th

This is NOT the Festival website and we cannot (and will not) answer your queries. Please visit the official Festival website for any information required. Meanwhile, the town itself is still open for visitors during the festival period. Any rumours you may have heard about the difficulty of travelling here are exaggerated. The town is quieter than usual, which is very good for those who like to browse without crowds.
SCC report on South West One

Not strictly a Glastonbury topic, I know; but most townsfolk will have more than a passing interest in this bottomless pit into which Somerset County Council is sluicing money at a vast rate of knots, for virtually nil savings. Enough taxpayers’ money to make what would be saved by closing every library in the county a mere pittance by comparison.
