How to arrange a room can reveal a little more about the personality of people who occupy it. How about your character? Professor of psychology at The University of Texas Sam Gosling said looking at the condition of one’s room is the most effective way to recognize its nature. Because in the room you can see your identity, habits and memory.
“If I enter your room, there is a collection of information (which can be seen) from a few weeks, months or years ago, which often cannot be made and can be a more reliable indicator of who that person really is,” explained Sam, as quoted by the BBC.
From the research Sam has done, he found that there are at least four general characters that can be seen from the arrangement of his room. What kind of person are you?
1. Minimalist Rooms
Not too much furniture and furnishings are the characteristics of a minimalist room. Usually there are only functional items such as beds, wardrobes, desks and work lamps or shelves. There are no displays, walls are painted in white or neutral colors, and even a pillow is necessary for sleeping.
“Minimalist bedrooms indicate that people tend to be introverted. They focus on themselves and do not like expressing emotions clearly. There can also be a precautionary element that requires him to be disciplined and minimal,” said behavioral psychologist Patrick Fagan.
Meanwhile Sam argues that a minimalist room could characterize two different people. If it is minimalist because he does not really care about the contents of the room, “Then he is a conventional person and his thinking is more traditional.” But if more because he likes minimalist interior style , indicating he is someone who wants everything well controlled. “Things that are messy will really bother them,” Sam said.
2. Messy Rooms
The owner of this room rarely makes his bed in the morning. Many items were scattered or piled on the floor even though in his room there were cupboards and drawers with six storage shelves. Not to mention a pile of dirty clothes in the corner of the room even though he had put a special laundry basket.
“The average person whose room is cluttered and less clean tends to be less reliable and difficult to direct. So maybe he is often late or does his work half-way and doesn’t finish it,” Sam said.
Although maybe the person is not like that, but the impression that appears more like that. In his research Sam found that when people enter a messy bedroom they will assume that the owner is unmanageable, unfavorable and lacks sympathy. “So if your bedroom is a mess, people might mistake your true personality,” Sam suggested.
Do you like to arrange your room with chandelier, carved dressing table, bed like a princess or many golden displays? Then you fall into this category.
What does it mean? “A perfect bedroom like this indicates the owner is a very meticulous person. Liking a good room is a signal that the person has an extrovert personality and hopes his guests will come in and spend his time there,” explained Sam.
On the other hand, psychotherapist Emma Azzopardi believes that this style of room arrangement characterizes her to be very concerned about other people’s judgments about her. Whether it’s when taking a selfie in a room or photographing room conditions for Instagram content.
“They may think too much about the public character and want to regulate what others have to see from him, rather than honestly showing himself,” he explained.
Like the glamor type, the artsy room owner also likes to arrange the room with decorations and items. But usually that has its own meaning or memories in his life. He arranges the rooms more artistically for comfort. Not to show others.
“This person tends to be open-minded but also less organized. Maybe the owner of a room like this is a liberal, adventurous, bohemian person and has a lot of thoughts,” Patrick concluded.
